Facebook Announces Changes to Ad Formats

Facebook just announced new changes for those using the platform for advertising. Starting August 19 “mobile News Feed ads will be compressed in order to ‘match the look and feel’ of the new Facebook design launched earlier this year”.

The main changes you can expect to see are:

  • Only three (3) lines of primary text will be visible on Facebook mobile News Feed. Users will be prompted to view additional text.
  • The maximum media height for photos without links and videos that can be supported is now vertical 4:5. Anything taller will be masked on Facebook mobile News Feed.

The goal of these changes is to maximize the potential for cross-promotion. Facebook notes it will “drive increased ad effectiveness and make it easier to use the same assets on Facebook News Feed and Instagram feed”

So basically, starting in August, if you want to continue to stay competitive for attention and you are looking to maximize your Facebook ads, not only do you need to keep in mind your images with the new height ratio but make sure those first three lines really grab attention.
